The modern web site

Modern websites, be they information sites, ecommerce sites or blogs, all now utilise a Content Management System for easier control of the data and content. Such websites are known as 'dynamic' sites as the content, or data, is held in a database system and the function of the page is to display the content. The CMS is the link between the database and the website pages. The CMS puts all the control of the site in your hands, with minimal knowledge of web site technology required.

Traditional-style web sites, known as 'Static' sites, on the other hand, hold the content in the page itself - this makes updating the content and changing the style of the website very difficult and costly. Inevitably management of a static site requires good knowledge of HTML and CSS (stylesheets).

The modern website must also make good use of Search Engine Optimisation techniques so the site can be easily found on Search Engines, the primary way your potential customers are going to find your website.
A good Content Management System has SEO built in so the user, you, can easily optimise each and every page of your site so that every page performs well on the Search Engines.

Joomla & WordPress Content Management Systems

For any project I use one of two very versatile Content Management Systems, namely Joomla or WordPress, depending on the web site requirement.
Both systems have very strong SEO built in for each page.
Both CMSs have a large number of free 'extensions', additional, easy-to-install modules that extend the site e.g. addition of discussion forums, shopping-carts etc.
Both CMSs also have a large number of quality 'themes', styles to make the site fit in with your corporate brand.
